Frequently asked questions

How much do consultations in the clinic cost?

Dr Melody Jackson works in the clinic at Norwest Private Hospital Medical Suites.

Postnatal visits (one hour) incur a gap fee of approximately $135. If you have reached your Extended Medicare Safety Net, the gap fee will be approximately $25.

If your baby requires a tongue tie release, there is an additional fee of $280 for this, with a rebate of approximately $45, or $235 if you have reached your Extended Medicare Safety Net. Please ring for further information.

All children under 10 years of age are routinely bulk billed for general practice appointments including vaccinations.

All other consultations, including GP appointments and GP antenatal shared care, will incur gap fees payable at the time of consultation.

Please note, I do not offer a money-back guarantee. I assure you that I will do my best to assist you with your concerns but I cannot promise to 'fix' every problem. I understand that there can be lot of grief and trauma when feeding your baby does not happen as you wish or plan and I will do my best to walk with you on your journey.

Can I bring my husband/wife/partner/support person?

Yes! Four ears will always take home more information than two ears!

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring your baby and their blue book. If you are using nipple shields or other devices, you will also need to bring these.

Do you perform home visits?

Dr Melody Jackson does not do any home visits.

If you would like a home visit with an IBCLC, you can find one here: https://www.lcanz.org/find-a-lactation-consultant/

What is the difference between a Breastfeeding Medicine Doctor and an IBCLC?

An IBCLC specialises in providing hands-on breastfeeding support and education, focusing on practical challenges like latch issues, milk supply, and pumping. They are certified through rigorous training in lactation but are not medical doctors.

On the other hand, a breastfeeding medicine doctor is a licensed physician with advanced training in lactation who can diagnose and treat medical conditions affecting breastfeeding, prescribe medications, and address complex situations such as induced lactation or breastfeeding after surgery. These doctors have completed additional training in breastfeeding medicine through organisations such as the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine.

What a Breastfeeding Medicine Doctor Does:

  • Diagnose and treat medical conditions: They address issues like low milk supply, mastitis, breast abscesses, nipple pain, and hormonal or physical challenges impacting lactation.
  • Provide care for breastfeeding-related medical concerns in the baby: Conditions such as tongue-tie, milk allergies, faltering growth, or oral restrictions.
  • Prescribe medications and treatments: For example, medications to increase milk supply or antibiotics for infections, managing medication interactions and complex regimes.
  • Support complex breastfeeding situations: Including induced lactation, relactation, or breastfeeding after breast surgery.

When to See a Breastfeeding Medicine Doctor:

  • You’re experiencing recurring or severe mastitis or nipple infections.
  • Your baby has weight gain issues or a diagnosed medical condition impacting feeding.
  • You’re inducing lactation or relactating and need a medical plan.
  • You have underlying health conditions, such as PCOS, that might affect lactation.
  • You have not been able to resolve your lactation difficulties with the hospital staff or other breastfeeding support.

“I acknowledge the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional custodians of this land and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded. I especially ACKNOWLEDGE the Dharug people, on whose land my practice is on.

May we all walk together for an Australia grounded in inclusion, equity and healing.”

A note on the term ‘woman’: we offer care that is inclusive. Not all people that will benefit from our support identify with female pronouns. We honour and respect all experiences as valid, and seek to provide gender inclusive care.
